JENNIE gets her first shoe with her name attached to it, and adidas did not hand her a colorway. The JENNIE x adidas Superstar Square Ballet arrives September 1 in Core Black with Off White trim.
The Superstar has been in the adidas line since 1969, first as a low-top basketball shoe with the rubber shell toe that let players cut without splitting the leather, then as the shoe Run-DMC turned into a cultural object in the mid-eighties. It is one of the few silhouettes with enough recognition to survive being taken apart, which is what happened here.
adidas kept the shell toe and then flattened and squared it off, widening the front of the shoe. The laces are gone. An elastic strap crosses the midfoot and a small bow sits near the toe, which is where the ballet reference actually lands. Inside there is a stitched label pairing JENNIE branding with the Originals Trefoil. This pair reads all black with the Three Stripes worked in tonally, so the shape does the talking.
To me this signals adidas is done treating the ballet flat as a seasonal experiment. The brand has been building toward this category for a couple of years, and pinning it to a Superstar rather than a new silhouette is the tell. It gives the shoe an instant reference point for someone who has never bought a flat before, and it gives adidas a way into a customer Originals has been circling. The off white version, LB3786, releases alongside it.
