FC Barcelona is back in the Kobe line on September 4, this time on the Nike Kobe 3 Low Protro in Electro Purple with metallic gold. The club theme has followed Kobe Bryant’s signature shoes for fifteen years and it makes sense every time. What is different here is the shape carrying it. Nike did not put Barcelona on a retro. It put Barcelona on a low-top version of a shoe that never had one.

The Zoom Kobe III arrived in 2008 as Kobe’s third Nike signature, a rounded, shell-like mid with a molded cage over the upper that looked like nothing else on a court that season. It sat in an odd place in the line even then. The Kobe 4 landed the following year and rewrote basketball footwear by proving a low-top could survive an NBA season, which is the shoe everyone remembers from that stretch. The Kobe 3 became the last of the old shape, the final signature before the line committed to going low, and it has spent most of the years since as a footnote between the Kobe 2 and the shoe that changed everything. The Kobe 3 Low Protro is Nike’s answer to that. It takes the molded cage and the general geometry of the 2008 shoe and cuts the collar down, producing something that reads as a Kobe 3 from the midfoot forward and as a modern low from the ankle back. Kobe never wore this. It is not a retro of anything, and understanding that changes how you read every colorway Nike puts on it.

The Barcelona version keeps the treatment simple. Purple covers nearly the whole shoe, running from the upper and laces across the molded cage and down through the midsole into a translucent outsole. Black sits underneath the side panels and around the collar to give the purple somewhere to land. Gold does the branding work, with Kobe’s Sheath logo on one tongue and the FC Barcelona crest on the other, and the same finish turns up on the heel Swooshes and inside the shoe. For a club collaboration in a year when most of them arrive covered in crests and numbers, the restraint is the design decision worth noting.

The reference point everyone will reach for is the Kobe 6 Barcelona from 2011, which became one of the harder colorways to find from that original run and gave the club theme its permanent place in the line. That pair worked because Kobe’s connection to Barcelona was real. He spent his childhood in Italy while his father played there, followed European football closely, and Barca stayed part of his life rather than a partnership someone built for him. Fifteen years later Nike is still drawing on it, only now the theme is being applied to shapes Kobe never saw. That is the current logic of the Protro program in miniature. The archive of shoes Kobe actually played in is finite, and it has largely been spent, so Nike is manufacturing new silhouettes out of old ones and applying the familiar themes to those instead. Whether that reads as expansion or as dilution depends on how much you needed the shoe to have a history. Nike is also putting the same Barcelona theme on a Kobe Dunk Low Protro the same day, which splits the story across two shapes and makes neither one the definitive version.

Price is where this gets messy. Sole Retriever lists the Kobe 3 Low Protro FC Barcelona at $190 and Sneaker Bar Detroit lists it at $200, so treat retail as unconfirmed until Nike posts the product page. The $190 figure has the better circumstantial case, because the two Kobe 3 Low Protro colorways that released September 1, the Grinch and the Platinum Grey, both carried $190. A $10 bump for a club makeup with gold detailing would not be unusual either. Anyone budgeting for this should plan on $200 and hope for $190.
