PUMA Speedcat Wedge Adds a Strap and a Lift to a Fireproof Racing Flat

PUMA Speedcat Wedge Adds a Strap and a Lift to a Fireproof Racing Flat

The Speedcat was built to disappear under a foot. PUMA designed it as fireproof Formula 1 footwear, low enough that a driver could read a brake pedal through the sole, and that flatness is most of the reason the shoe still looks the way it does. The Speedcat Wedge, out now in PUMA White-Gum, keeps the racing upper and then argues with every part of the brief. The collar climbs past the ankle, a suede strap pulls the forefoot shut, and the sole underneath ramps steadily from the toe back to the heel.

PUMA’s own account of the model is short and unusually specific. The brand calls the Speedcat an icon of racing culture that has been synonymous with speed and precision for over 25 years, and says it originated as a fireproof Formula 1 footwear style before it transcended the tracks of Monaco for the streets of global fashion capitals. Everything about the original build follows from that job. A driver needs a narrow last, a thin sole that transmits pedal pressure, and an upper with no bulk at the ankle to snag in a footwell. The suede toe wrap existed because that is the panel a driver destroys first. When PUMA brought the shoe back it reissued the original red and black colorways with a new Cat logo at the front, and it landed with an audience that had never watched a race and did not need to. The shape carried it, not the story behind the shape.

This one is a mid-cut. Off-white suede wraps the toe and runs back through the overlays and the formstrip, white leather fills the quarter panels, and a wide suede strap crosses the midfoot over the lacing with a debossed PUMA wordmark set into it. A gold-tone PUMA wordmark is embroidered on the outer ankle panel above a padded collar that sits well clear of the ankle bone. The laces are a flat rope-textured cord in the same off-white. PUMA describes the construction as adding extra lift with a hidden wedge and textured details, and the photographs show something slightly different. The gum outsole is thin under the toe and thickens without a break all the way back, so the lift reads plainly in profile even though no separate heel block sits under the shoe. Hidden is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

What makes this pair worth arguing about is the size of what PUMA has built on top of a driving shoe. The Speedcat page on the brand’s US site currently lists 195 products. Alongside the Speedcat OG there is a Speedcat Ballet, a Speedcat Ballet Suede, a Speedcat Ballet Dress-Up, a Speedcat Dress-Up and a Speedcat Print, and then the Wedge itself branches into OG, Leather, Tonal and Luster versions. A fireproof racing flat has become a women’s footwear platform with a heel option, and the Wedge sits further from the original brief than anything else on that page. Read one way that is dilution of a performance story PUMA spent decades earning. Read another way it is the brand finally doing what it has never managed with the Suede, which is turning a fixed shape into an actual range instead of a colorway calendar. The second read is closer to right.

The Wedge is also where PUMA has been putting its development work. The collection page carries it in leather, in a tonal treatment, in a metallic Luster finish and in an OG cut, four distinct builds of a single idea, set against the Speedcat OG listed in thirteen colorways. That ratio is the tell. PUMA is recolouring the original and engineering the wedge.

The Wedge lists at $130. That puts it at the top of the franchise, above the Speedcat OG at $100 and a long way above the Speedcat Ballet Suede at $80, and ten dollars above the Wedge OG and the Wedge Tonal, which both sit at $120. The leather and suede build is what the difference buys. It is also the exact number PUMA is charging this fall for the Suede Hike, which suggests the brand has settled on a figure for a classic with something added to it rather than taken away.

PUMA Speedcat

The Speedcat Wedge in PUMA White-Gum released September 17 under style 408117_01, in women’s sizes 5.5 to 11, at PUMA.com for $130. A second colorway, Inky Depths-PUMA Black, runs on the same style number. If the strap is the part that loses you, the Daniëlle Cathari Speedcat goes the other direction and deletes the lacing altogether, and the PUMA Suede Hike applies the same add-hardware instinct to the other classic in the line.
