Air Jordan 4 "Amazonas" Is J Balvin’s Fourth Straight Jordan, and His Most Restrained

J Balvin has now put his name on four consecutive numbered Air Jordans, and the fourth one arrives October 2 looking almost nothing like the three before it. The Air Jordan 4 Amazonas is a tonal sand shoe from the collar to the outsole, with no contrast panel and no loud graphic anywhere a passerby would catch it. For a collaborator whose earlier Jordans traded on color, that is a real change of posture, and it is the most interesting decision anywhere on the pair.

The Air Jordan 4 landed in 1989 as Tinker Hatfield’s second shoe for the line, and Nike’s own history of the model calls it the first global release of the franchise. That is the moment the Jordan line stopped being an American product and started being an export. It was also the first Jordan built around what Nike calls an over-moulded mesh, the netting set into the quarter panel that let the upper breathe and gave the silhouette its instantly readable profile. The plastic lace supports flanking the eyelets pulled the same trick in reverse, taking a functional lockdown part and promoting it to signature hardware. Michael Jordan wore the model through the close of the 1988 to 1989 playoffs, including the buzzer beater against Cleveland that the sport still calls The Shot. Almost four decades later the 4 is the silhouette collaborators keep reaching for, because its panels are divided cleanly enough to absorb a material change without the shoe losing its shape.

The Amazonas takes that room and spends every bit of it on surface. Nike’s copy says the colorway translates the region’s “extraordinary biodiversity into a rich palette,” and the product photography tells a narrower story than the word palette suggests. The upper is one continuous pale sand, and the variation arrives through texture rather than color. A scaled, reptilian emboss runs across the forefoot and quarter panel. A woven basket weave sits on the lower panel beneath the wing. The familiar mesh is rendered in the same tone as everything around it, the Air unit stays clear and visible in the midsole, and the heel marks are embossed rather than printed. The only real color on the shoe lives on the insole, a teal and green marbled graphic under the Jumpman that vanishes the second a foot goes in. Bilingual Just Do It lace dubraes and Jumpman x J Balvin branding carry the collaboration. Compare that to the Air Jordan 4 Birds of Paradise, which took a nature brief and answered it with color.

This is the quietest shoe of the four, and that is exactly what makes it worth arguing about. The earlier Balvin Jordans worked as event releases, built to be identified across a room. This one is a material exercise, and routing the rainforest through embossing instead of through color is the kind of restraint that usually shows up three or four collaborations deep, once both sides have stopped trying to prove the partnership exists. Jordan Brand spent the same fortnight reissuing the Air Jordan 1 High OG in Royal, a colorway that sells on instant recognition from twenty feet. The Amazonas is the opposite pitch, and it is a harder one to make. Whether the market rewards it is a separate question entirely. There is also a read here about where Jordan Brand thinks its collaborator program is going. Four shoes into a partnership, the easy move is another loud one, because the loud ones move. Handing a musician the 4 and letting him answer a nature brief with embossing suggests somebody on the brand side is comfortable letting a collaboration age into something subtler, which is not how these usually run.

Retail is $225. That sits above a standard Air Jordan 4 Retro and lands about where Jordan Brand has been placing its collaborator editions, and the premium is buying surface work rather than a construction change, since the midsole and the visible Air setup are the ones the model has carried since 1989. The colorway has no resale history yet because it has not released, so anything said about its aftermarket is a guess. What can be said is that a tonal, graphic-light Jordan gives the secondary market less to photograph than a high-contrast pair like the Comic does. Anyone buying this one to flip is working against the shoe’s own brief.

The Air Jordan 4 x J Balvin Amazonas releases October 2 at 7 a.m. ET, style code IW2872-700, at $225. The Nike SNKRS launch page is live now for notifications, and a Nike search on the style code will surface remaining stock and any additional sizes once the pair goes live. Nike has the release listed as a SNKRS launch, so entries run through the app rather than a general on-site sale, and the usual draw rules apply.
