The Air Max line has spent most of 2026 reissuing itself. The 95 keeps coming back in Big Bubble trim, the 90 rotates through one premium after another, and the newest number in the family arrived through a 3D printing partner rather than a factory. The Air Max Metro does none of that. It is a new silhouette with no archive behind it, it is on nike.com right now in Black, Light Photo Blue and Illusion Green, and the brief printed on its own product page is sidewalks rather than history.
That brief is worth taking seriously, because the walking Air Max is a real category and Nike has never treated it as a glamorous one. The Air Max Excee and the Air Max Torch 4 sit at the bottom of the men’s Air Max wall and move enormous volume without ever appearing in a campaign. The Air Max 270 made the case a few years ago that a shoe built entirely around a visible heel unit could carry a lifestyle line on its own, and it did so without a single race in its history. The Metro lands in that lineage rather than in the running one, and the naming says so out loud. There is no Zoom unit in it, no plate, and no race-day claim anywhere in Nike’s copy. The outsole pattern is described as built to take on the streets, which is the kind of sentence a brand writes when the shoe is meant for a train platform and not a start line. Nike has been making that shoe for twenty years. It has rarely bothered to give it a new name.

What is actually on this one is a mix. Nike Air sits sandwiched inside a Cushlon 3.0 midsole, and the photographs show that midsole in off-white with heavy black speckling, with a window at the heel where the Air unit reads as a deep blue. The upper layers synthetic leather and suede under mesh overlays, built in Light Photo Blue with black panels and Illusion Green piping that traces the overlay lines down the lateral side. The tongue tag is black with the Nike wordmark set in the same green, and the green carries through the forefoot of the outsole. Nike lists the colorway as Black, Light Photo Blue, Illusion Green and Black, which puts black first, and the photographs read blue first. Both are defensible depending on which panel the eye lands on. The shoe is louder in hand than the color name suggests, and the speckled midsole is doing most of the work.

The reason this release matters is that the silhouette is new. Nike’s Air Max business has leaned hard on the back catalogue, and almost every Air Max story on this site over the last two months has been a retro, a premium makeup of a retro, or a collaboration built on top of a retro. A fresh silhouette aimed squarely at the walking customer is a different kind of bet, and it is the kind that either becomes a quiet ten-year earner or vanishes in two seasons. The Metro has the shape to do the former. It is low, wide through the forefoot, heavy on overlays, and it looks like a shoe somebody will buy three pairs of over four years without ever reading a release post about it. That is not a small compliment. It is the whole business underneath the one everybody writes about, and Nike has not fed it a new silhouette in a while.
Retail is $130, which places it near the bottom of the men’s Air Max wall. The Excee and the Torch 4 both list at $100 on nike.com today, the Air Max 90 is $135, the 90 Premium is $145, the 270 is $170, the 95 Big Bubble is $190 and the 95 Big Bubble Premium is $200. So the Metro undercuts every retro in the line and sits a small step above the two entry models. For a shoe carrying real suede, a new foam compound and a visible Air window, that is a sharper number than this line has offered in a while, and it is the clearest signal of who the shoe was drawn for. Compare it to the running side of the house and the gap is wider still.

The Nike Air Max Metro is available now at nike.com in the Black and Light Photo Blue makeup, style code IW4935-003, at $130. The size run goes from M6 and W7.5 through M15 and W16.5, and Nike is carrying the shoe in women’s and big kids’ fits alongside the men’s. There is no separate SNKRS draw attached to it, which fits a shoe of this kind, and no dated launch window was published because it went straight to general release.
