One Block Down Revived the Air Max 95 Lux, and Put Italy Inside the Air Bubble

The Milan boutique One Block Down brings the Air Max 95 Lux back to Nike SNKRS on November 6, in black leather with gym green trim. Lux is not a tier Nike invented for this collaboration. It is a twenty-year-old idea the company stopped using, a leather Air Max 95 built in Italy at a point when very little else in Nike’s catalogue was. One Block Down is Italian. The detail that explains the whole project sits where almost nobody looks, inside the forefoot Air window.

The Lux Pack ran in the early 2000s and it was a small, strange program. Nike took a handful of its own classics, the Air Force 1 in low and mid, the Air Trainer SX and the Air Max 95, and had them built in Italy in high-end leather with silver hardware, most of them finished in black. Sotheby’s has since catalogued those Air Force 1 Lux pairs with Italy in the name. The point was never a collaboration or a story. It was Nike testing whether its own sportswear could be made the way a luxury house would make it, at a moment when Italian production still carried that meaning on a label. The pack did not become a franchise. The Air Max 95 Lux surfaced once more in 2019 when Supreme used it for a three-colorway run, and then went quiet for another seven years. Nike has reissued nearly everything else from that era, which leaves Lux as one of the last sub-lines it still had sitting on the shelf.

The upper is black leather throughout, and the panels that normally carry the 95’s layered mesh are cut from a textured leather that imitates it, so the structure still reads from across a room and turns solid in the hand. The 2001 pair used perforations in the same place. Silver hardware is back on the eyestays. A debossed mark on the tongue folds One Block Down’s own logo into the Swoosh, pressed into the leather rather than printed on top of it. The Italian material then shows up twice more in Nike’s press images, and both are easy to miss. The forefoot Air window carries a gradient running from green through clear to red. The insoles repeat it, one green and one deep red, with the co-brand logo set between them. A metal hang tag cut in the shape of the Italian peninsula hangs off the lacing on a ball chain with the shop’s name in script across it. Even the box drops Nike’s orange, splitting into a pale pink and tan two-tone with One Block Down set alongside Just Do It on the lid.

Reading that green-to-red gradient as the Italian flag takes no great leap, and it is the best decision in the shoe, because it puts the reference inside the one component the Air Max 95 is actually known for instead of on a heel tab. One Block Down has earned the right to make it. The Milan shop, co-founded by Patrizio Vita, has worked with Nike repeatedly, on an Inter Milan apparel collection and on a run of Air Max Plus releases, and Nike gave it a Talking Shop feature on SNKRS. The Air Max Plus history matters here more than the football one. The TN is the European shoe above all others, and a retailer that has spent years serving that audience knows exactly why a black leather 95 carrying no graphics at all will move in Milan and Naples. What Nike gets back is a way to restart a dormant luxury sub-line without having to argue for it internally, which is how most of its archive revivals now begin.

Retail is $200. That is the same number Nike put on the Greedy Big Bubble pairs and ten dollars above the $190 the chrome Big Bubble carried. For a collaboration whose entire premise is leather and Italian provenance, charging what the in-house premium tier already charges is the real surprise here. Sneaker Freaker puts Supreme’s 2019 Lux pairs at $500 a pair, and that is the only direct comparison on record, since those were the last leather Lux 95s to reach retail at all. Against that, $200 reads as a volume decision rather than a luxury one.

The One Block Down Air Max 95 Lux enters Nike SNKRS on November 6 at 8 a.m. PT under style code IM0704-001, priced at $200, in a colorway Nike lists as Black, Black, Gym Green and Black. Nike SNKRS is the primary channel, and One Block Down’s own webstore is the other place to watch, since the shop has carried its previous Nike projects directly.
