Nike‘s product copy for this one opens with “Peek-a-BOO” and never names the animal. The Air Force 1 Low Retro “Halloween” arrives October 23 in Baroque Brown, Black and Terra Red, with brown faux fur covering the Swoosh and wrapping the collar, a pair of slitted eyes set into the fur at the heel, and a tongue label carrying an embroidered skyline above the letters NYC. The shoe is a rat. The label is the only place Nike admits where the rat lives.
The Air Force 1 arrived in late 1982 as a basketball shoe designed by Bruce Kilgore, and it stopped being a basketball shoe so long ago that the useful question now is which version of it a release is built on. Nike has spent 2026 putting the slimmer 2001 pattern back through the line, and this pair uses it. Nike’s own product copy calls it the Retro profile and names the four changes in order, a slimmer look, a rounded toe box, a curved heel tab and a longer tongue. That matters more than it sounds. The standard ’07 build has carried almost every seasonal makeup for the better part of fifteen years, and the Retro last is the one collectors kept asking Nike to use again. A plain white inline pair opened that program in the summer, and the “Nightmare” pair lands the same day as this one. Putting a holiday novelty on the better-shaped version is a small decision with a real cost behind it.

The base is black tumbled leather with the usual perforated toe. The Swoosh is cut from brown faux fur rather than leather, and the same fur runs the collar and climbs the heel into a raised tuft. Set into that tuft on each shoe is an eye, an orange iris with a vertical black slit through the middle of it, the pupil of a nocturnal animal rather than a cartoon. The laces are thick black chenille. The tongue label is black woven fabric carrying a city skyline embroidered in brown above NYC in a dripping red horror typeface. The midsole band is translucent and reads dusty pink in daylight, and so does the full outsole, which is the glow compound before anyone turns the lights off. Nike’s benefits copy mentions the fur, the glow eyes and the glow outsole and stops there. It does not mention New York, the skyline, the slit pupil, or the animal those three things add up to.
This is the second rat Air Force 1 Nike has shipped this autumn and the first one it has signposted. The College Grey and Pink Glaze pair in September had the grey coat, the pink feet and the long tail of the thing with no explanation attached, and the argument there was that Nike had built a rat shoe and declined to say so. Six weeks later the same idea returns with a city stitched onto the tongue. Halloween product at Nike is usually a glow sole and a pumpkin, and the pumpkin is where the budget stops. The Witness X does the glow-face version of that this year. Naming a specific city on a specific holiday is a different kind of decision, because it ties the shoe to a place where Halloween is a street event rather than a doorbell, and New York’s is a parade through the Village rather than a night at home.

It also explains the shape of the pack. The companion release is a Dunk Low whose tongue label Nike identifies as Shibuya, Tokyo’s own Halloween gathering and a very different kind of crowd. Two shoes, two cities, two street scenes, and only the Dunk gets its city named in the written copy. The Air Force 1 leaves its label to do the work, which is consistent with how Nike handled the September pair and is becoming a pattern worth watching rather than a one-off.
Retail is $140. That sits above the $115 Nike charges for a standard ’07 Air Force 1 this month and below the $150 it asks for the ’01 builds and for the GORE-TEX Vibram pairs, which is roughly where a seasonal makeup carrying real material cost should land. The comparison worth making is the Dunk Low Retro at $130 for a leather upper and no novelty at all. A fur Swoosh, a full glow outsole and an embroidered woven label are worth the difference between them. Whether a fur Swoosh survives a wet November is a separate question, and one the photographs cannot answer.

The Nike Air Force 1 Low Retro “Halloween” in Baroque Brown, Black and Terra Red is style code IV4884-200 at $140, with an October 23 date carried in Nike’s own product feed and on its product page. Sole Retriever lists the pair under the name “Halloween Rat,” which is not a name Nike uses anywhere in its own copy. Check Nike and Foot Locker.
