The Air Max 90 SP Draws Its Panels in Thread and Takes Nike Air Off the Heel

The Air Max 90 SP Draws Its Panels in Thread and Takes Nike Air Off the Heel

Nike is putting an Air Max 90 SP out on November 13 in black leather, and from a distance it is the least eventful shoe on the calendar. Triple black, no contrast, nothing announcing itself. Look at the panels and the reason for the SP becomes clear. The quarter, the mudguard and the Swoosh are not separate pieces laid over a base. They are outlines stitched into one continuous leather surface, and the heel has lost its Nike Air wordmark altogether.

What the 90 has always been

Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Max 90, and it did not launch under that name. It arrived in 1990 as the Air Max III and was renamed only in 2000, when the reissue took its title from its launch year. Nike says so on its own history page. Hatfield worked forward from the 1987 Air Max and the 1989 Air Max Light, and the 90’s contribution to the line was clarity. Where the 1987 shoe hid most of its cushioning and the 1989 shoe thinned it out, the 90 framed its Air window in a bright plastic surround and built the whole upper out of stacked, hard-edged panels that pointed at it. The infrared on the first pair was doing a job. It told your eye where to look.

That panel structure is the model’s actual signature, more than any single colorway. Thirty-six years of Air Max 90s have been variations on cutting those shapes out of different materials, and almost every one keeps the pieces visibly separate. The mudguard is a mudguard. The eyestay is a bolted-on strip. The heel carries a plastic badge with Nike Air molded into it. Take those apart and you are no longer decorating the 90, you are arguing with it.

What this pair actually does

The upper is smooth black leather with the panel lines rendered as tonal stitching rather than as cut edges. The Swoosh reads as a stitched outline on the same surface it sits on, filled with nothing but the leather underneath. The eyestay and the heel badge, normally TPU on this model, are perforated leather here instead. The heel badge is the detail worth stopping on, because it is blank. No Nike Air, no molded lettering, nothing. A perforated leather panel in the shape where the branding used to be.

The one thing Nike did not tone down is the Air. The heel window stays clear and visible against all that black, which on a shoe this uniform is the only place light catches at all.

Why strip the branding

This is NikeLab logic, and the mid-2010s version of that program made the same moves. Remove the loud parts, keep the silhouette legible, let material and construction carry the shoe. What is different now is where it is pointed. NikeLab was selling to people who already knew what an Air Max 90 looked like and wanted one without the noise. A blank heel badge in 2026 reads less like restraint and more like Nike noticing that the quiet-luxury end of the market will pay for a sneaker that does not say anything.

Whether it works depends on how you feel about the panel lines. Stitching them in keeps the drawing and throws away the depth, so the shoe photographs flatter than any 90 in recent memory and almost certainly looks better in person than it does on a screen. That is a strange thing to build in a year when most releases are designed for the grid.

The price is not settled

Nike’s own product data carries this pair at $170. Release trackers have been reporting $150 since the middle of October, and at least one of them labels its own figure as reported rather than confirmed. That is a real twenty-dollar spread on a shoe nobody has been able to buy yet, so treat the number as unconfirmed until SNKRS posts it.

Either figure sits above a standard Air Max 90, which is where the SP badge does its work. For comparison inside the same window, the Air Max 95 Big Bubble arriving three days earlier is $190 with a larger Air unit and a nubuck upper, and the Air Max 90 “Green Bay Packers” and the rest of this year’s 90s have mostly stayed under both.

Release details

The Nike Air Max 90 SP in black leather releases November 13 under style code IV4504-001, with a Medium Olive and Sequoia pair on the same date under IV4504-201. Nike has it configured as a SNKRS launch with a one pair limit rather than an open stock release, and SNKRS is where to watch for the entry window. Expect a Tier 0 retailer list alongside it rather than wide distribution.
