The Cryoshot Mercurial Chrome '02 OG Arrives Last, After Patta and Jordan Brand Already Had Their Turn

Nike has run the Cryoshot program for most of a year without releasing the version that explains it. That ends October 13, when the Cryoshot Mercurial Chrome ’02 OG arrives in Chrome and Hot Lime, the colorway Ronaldo Nazario wore. Every earlier Cryoshot built on a Mercurial carried a collaborator’s handwriting somewhere on it. This one carries none, and it is the first time the program has put out the boot most people picture when the words chrome Mercurial come up.

The Mercurial arrived in 1998, built for Ronaldo and debuted at that summer’s World Cup. Nike credits it as the first high-profile football boot made in synthetic leather, a switch that let the boot hold color while staying light over stainless steel studs. Peter Hudson, who designed it, has said the boots that came before it resembled farm equipment. The Mercurial Vapor followed in 2002 and cut more weight out of the same idea, and the chrome finish Ronaldo wore that year came out of looking at sports cars. Nike has described the intent as a boot built to reflect its environment, which in practice meant flashing cameras, packed stadiums and cut grass. That is an unusual brief for competitive equipment, and it is the reason this particular make-up has outlived the era it played in. Most boots are remembered for who wore them. This one is remembered for how it read under stadium lights, which is why Nike keeps finding reasons to bring it back. The Vapor also marked the point where Nike stopped chasing football’s established names and started setting the terms, a shift the company went through in roughly four years.

Cryoshot exists to solve the problem that creates. A boot this good-looking spends its working life on a surface almost nobody walks on, so the program takes the boot as built, studs included, and seals the outsole inside clear TPU. The cleats stay visible and the shoe becomes wearable on pavement. This version keeps a synthetic leather upper, consistent with the original, and sets it on a drop-in midsole with a Zoom Air unit in the heel, so the extra height under the foot is doing cushioning work rather than only hiding hardware. Viewed from underneath, the hot lime studs sit suspended in plastic like something in a specimen case, and that is the detail worth turning the shoe over for. Nike’s own copy calls it a soccer-right look that can go anywhere. For once a marketing line describes the engineering accurately, because the upper really is the boot and the sole unit really is the compromise.

The release order is the part worth arguing about. Patta took a Cryoshot Mercurial in June, the 1998 boot rendered for the Dutch national team. Jordan Brand followed with a 2002 Vapor in red crinkled leather and suede Swooshes, with a still from a 1996 commercial sealed under the heel. Both were strong shoes, and both were somebody else’s reading of the silhouette. The plain chrome, the version that needs no explanation and no guest designer, got held back until the program had already built an audience on guest work. Nike tends to do this with franchises it trusts, keeping the obvious execution in reserve while the unusual ones do the teaching. It is a confident sequence and it concedes that the chrome Vapor does not need help selling itself. The risk is that two collaborator versions have already collected the attention this one was built to receive. The counter-argument is that those were doing audience work rather than competing for the same buyer, and whoever passed on an orange Dutch make-up and a red Jordan Brand one was always waiting for this.

Retail is $200, the same figure the Patta version carried in June and ten dollars under the Jordan Brand make-up at $210. Three releases inside that narrow a band is worth noting, because it marks Cryoshot as a line with a settled price position rather than a run of one-offs priced by whoever showed up. Against the wider lifestyle market, $200 buys an Air unit and a construction nobody else is attempting, which is a stronger value argument than most shoes at that number can put together. Whether the plain version holds its number better than the collaborations did is the open question, since those arrived with partner scarcity attached and this one is positioned as the version anybody can buy.
