Nike brings the Rejuven8 Run 4×4 to SNKRS on November 18 in two women’s colorways, and the interesting part is what the shoe gives up. The Rejuven8 Run has always been identifiable from across a room because of its cage, an open outer shell built to let air move through it. The 4×4 covers that shell in suede. What survives is the part most people never looked at twice, a removable inner bootie that works perfectly well as a shoe by itself.
The Rejuven8 Run is not new, and it was never built to be a fashion object. Hypebeast dates the original to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where Nike made it a post-performance shoe for athletes who had finished competing and wanted something breathable to walk out in. That brief explains the whole construction. The cage-like outer shell exists to move air. The removable bootie inside exists so the thing can be worn two ways, open for airflow or sealed up for warmth. Nike pulled the model out of retirement earlier this year, and Highsnobiety called the result a two-fer sneaker, which is accurate, because the booties carry their own rubber outsoles and go on without the shell around them. The revival has run through a short list of colorways since, a Voltage Green pair, a Bright Cactus pair, and a “Rust Factor” edition that shipped two interchangeable booties in one box. Several shoes at Nike now carry the Rejuven8 name. The Run is the one shaped like a running shoe.

The 4×4 trades the cage for a suede shell, and the two launch colorways treat that differently. The Linen pair is soft tan suede over a cream collar, lace loop and heel, with a dark grey midsole and outsole unit that wraps up over the toe and around the back in one piece. That unit is speckled rather than solid, flecked through with lighter grit, and the spare laces in the box are braided cream cord shot through with black diamonds that pick up the same speckle. The Smoke Grey pair runs colder, a grey-green suede over a near-black bottom with black laces and a black collar. Underfoot both carry what Nike calls cushy foam and encapsulated Air, on a deep square-lug rubber outsole. The bootie is the part worth studying. Nike photographs it on its own, outside the shell, and in that frame it reads like a finished shoe, a cream stretch twill slip-on with a seam down the toe, a ribbed heel pull tab and a black mesh collar panel carrying a small white Swoosh. New Balance reached a similar place by subtraction when it took the laces off the 204L. Nike got there by building the second shoe first and wrapping it in a third.

Covering the cage looks like a strange call, because the cage is what made the Rejuven8 Run legible, and tan suede is a far quieter shoe than Voltage Green. The logic shows up in where Nike has aimed this version. Recovery footwear has spent two years turning into ordinary footwear, and the pairs that sold were the ones people could wear to the grocery store, the same read ASICS worked from when it built the GEL-SLOWCUSH for recovery days. Suede does that in November. An open cage does not. Nike’s own copy for the 4×4 says the suede is there to keep the wearer snug all season, which is a winter argument rather than a recovery one. The cost is that the shoe now competes on how it looks, against every other soft, low, earth-toned thing on the shelf, and the modular bootie is the only argument it can make that nothing else on that shelf can.
Retail is $145, which puts the 4×4 above the revival’s opening price. Hypebeast listed the “Rust Factor” edition at $135 in February, and that pair shipped two booties where this one ships a single bootie, so the difference is buying suede rather than parts. The ReactX Rejuven8 that The Whitaker Group worked on this summer sold at $75, a different shoe doing a different job under the same family name. Against the rest of Nike’s lifestyle board the 4×4 lands between a P-6000 at $125 and a Vomero Plus at $180, and neither of those comes apart in the hand.

The Nike Rejuven8 Run 4×4 releases November 18 through SNKRS at $145, in women’s sizing only. Linen/Natural/Off Noir carries style code IU3143-200, and Smoke Grey/Black/Hyper Royal carries IU3143-001. A Nike search on the style code will surface both once the listings go live. Nike has been splitting launches between SNKRS and open stock lately, as it did with the two Alphafly 4 colorways this month.
