The Cloudnova Moon Mary Jane Is Zendaya’s Second Act With On

On and Zendaya released their second co-created collection on October 1, and the piece worth stopping on is a shoe that should not work on paper. The Cloudnova Moon, the all-day model Zendaya helped shape the first time around, now arrives with a strap across the instep. A Swiss running company built on CloudTec has made a Mary Jane, and it has done it in three colorways at once rather than putting one out to see what happens.

The Cloudnova sits at the soft end of On’s range. It is what the brand points people toward when they want its look and its underfoot feel without a race-day plate or a trail outsole, and it has quietly turned into the label’s commuter shoe. The Cloudnova Moon is the version Zendaya and stylist Law Roach worked on with On for the first collection, a rounded, slipper-adjacent take that leaned further into shape than into mileage. On files it as an all-day shoe rather than a running one, and the men’s and women’s versions carry separate article numbers.

That history matters for what follows, because the Moon was already the least athletic thing in On’s catalogue. It had an engineered knit upper, a speed-lace setup and almost no visual reference to running beyond the logo on the heel. Moving it to a Mary Jane is a shorter step from there than it would be from anything else the brand builds.

The new version keeps the knit upper and the speed laces and adds a single strap over the instep. In the product photography the lace is still present, a thin tonal cord tied in a small bow at the throat, so the strap is an addition rather than a replacement for the closure. The shape reads closer to a soft loafer than to a school shoe, with a rounded toe and a collar that sits well below the ankle bone. It arrives in Clove and Ivory, Dew and Antler, and Black and Ivory, all of them women’s. Clove is the warm brown pair and it shows the construction most clearly, with the strap and the lace picked out against a paler sole unit. On already sells a men’s Cloudnova Moon under its own article number, so holding the Mary Jane to women’s sizing reads as a decision rather than a limit of the mold. The campaign sets all of it against a red backdrop, with Zendaya in a custom python print the collection’s own copy frames as a modern camo, shot by the Argentinian directing trio Pantera in the language of an action film.

The strap has become the cheapest way for a sneaker brand to make a women’s-first silhouette without designing one. BAPE added a strap to the STA. Simone Rocha did it to the adidas Climacool. New Balance got to a similar place with the 204V by taking the laces off a retro runner instead. In each case the base shoe already existed and the strap did the work of making it read as something other than a sneaker.

On is running the same arithmetic and it has a better reason than most. The brand has spent the past few years pushing into fashion retail, and a performance company cannot keep arriving at that end of the market with another mesh runner. A strap is legible. It tells a buyer standing in a department store what the shoe is for before they get to the logo. The open question is whether On can hold that ground once the novelty wears off, because underneath the strap this is still a soft knit shoe with a running brand’s sole under it, and the people who buy Mary Janes have a century of other options.

A strap is also a hedge. If the shoe does not land, On has not spent a development cycle on a new mold, and the Cloudnova Moon goes back to being the slip-on it already was. That is the quiet appeal of this entire category of release, and it is the reason there will be more of them from brands that have never made a dress shoe in their lives.

Retail is $190 across all three colorways. That is where On has been placing its design-led product rather than its running shoes, and it is the clearest signal of what this is meant to be. The shoe is priced as a styled object with a performance company’s construction behind it, not as a cheaper way into the brand. Forecasting resale on it would be premature when all three colorways are available at retail on day one, and that breadth says On expects to sell these rather than seed them.

The Cloudnova Moon Mary Jane is out now, October 1, at on.com and at On’s own stores worldwide. Style codes are 3WG30586231 for Clove and Ivory, 3WG30586230 for Dew and Antler, and 3WG30581430 for Black and Ivory, all at $190. On is also running pop-ups built around the collection in Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo and Chengdu, where the apparel and the shoe are being shown together.
