The Hybrid RCN Hyrox Nitro Elite Is PUMA Treating Fitness Racing Like the Marathon

PUMA releases the Hybrid RCN Hyrox Nitro Elite Camo on November 15, a training shoe built for a race format that barely existed a decade ago. Hyrox runs eight kilometers in one kilometer blocks with a workout station after each one, and the footwear problem that creates sits awkwardly between running and training. PUMA has answered it by taking the foam out of its marathon racing line and putting it under a shoe that also has to survive a loaded sled.

The scale of the format explains the shoe. The first Hyrox race was held in Hamburg in 2018 with roughly 600 people in it. By the 2023/24 season it had passed 175,000 participants across more than 65 races, and PUMA signed on in 2024 as the official apparel and footwear partner for every event on the calendar. The brand then renewed early, in January 2025, pushing the deal out to 2030. PUMA now counts 650,000 participants across 74 events in 2024/25 and projects more than 1.3 million across over 100 events this season.

Roughly six hundred people to over a million in eight seasons is the kind of curve that makes a brand build category-specific product instead of recoloring what it already sells. Road racing earned dedicated carbon-plated shoes once marathons were filling entries by the tens of thousands. Hyrox has reached comparable participation in under a decade, and it did it with a course that spends half its time indoors on rubber matting.

The station list is what makes the brief unusual. A Hyrox athlete covers 1,000 meters on a SkiErg, pushes a sled 50 meters and pulls one back the same distance, clears 80 meters of burpee broad jumps, rows another 1,000 meters, carries kettlebells 200 meters, lunges 100 meters under a sandbag and finishes on 100 wall balls. Almost none of that is a running movement, and most of it loads the foot laterally or under a static press. Then the athlete goes back out and runs another kilometer on it.

The Hybrid RCN carries a full-length NITROFOAM Elite midsole. Elite is the designation PUMA reserves for its racing tier, so this is the same family of foam that sits under the brand’s marathon shoes rather than the firmer compounds it normally puts in trainers. Underneath is a PUMAGRIP outsole, which has to handle a tarmac or track loop and a gym floor in the same event. The upper is engineered mesh and PUMA lists the shoe at 218 grams, which is racing weight.

The Camo in the name is not military camouflage. It is a black and white marbled print running across the whole upper, cut by a yellow Formstrip and by HYROX set out in yellow along the lateral side, with the wordmark carried onto both heels. The outsole photograph shows a dark structural section set into the white rubber across the midfoot, which is the area that takes the load when an athlete is driving a sled forward rather than rolling through a running gait.

Hybrid training shoes usually fail the same way. A shoe stable enough for loaded carries and lunges is too stiff and too heavy to run well in, and a shoe light enough to race in collapses under a sled. Most brands split the difference and build something that does neither job properly. PUMA has gone the other way and built a racing shoe that it then asks to handle the stations, which is a defensible reading of where the field actually loses time. Most Hyrox athletes are closer to their ceiling on the floor than on the run, and the runs are still half the event.

Whether it survives is a separate question and not one a product page can answer. A full-length Elite foam midsole under 200 meters of farmer’s carry and 100 wall balls is either the sharpest thing anyone has done in this category or the quickest way to flatten an expensive midsole. It is the same tension the Nike Hybrid RN ran into from the opposite direction, putting a running name on a shoe built for the gym.

Retail is $275, and the number is doing as much work as the shoe. PUMA’s own marathon racer, the FAST-R NITRO Elite 3, sits at $300, and the MB.06 released this month at $130. So the Hyrox shoe is priced just under a carbon marathon racer and at more than double a signature basketball shoe. PUMA is betting this audience prices footwear against a race shoe rather than against a cross trainer, which is a bet on Hyrox being something people equip for rather than something they try once.

The Hybrid RCN Hyrox Nitro Elite Camo releases November 15 at $275, in men’s and women’s versions, through us.puma.com. The men’s pair carries product number 315571 in the 01 colorway and the women’s is listed separately under 315572. PUMA has not announced stockists beyond its own channel.
