The Total Orange Alphafly 4 Goes Through SNKRS and the Hyper Pink Does Not, Both on November 12

Nike is putting two new Alphafly 4 colorways out on November 12, and the two are not arriving the same way. The men’s Total Orange pair carries a SNKRS entry window on Nike’s own release board. The women’s Hyper Pink pair carries no entry window at all, only a plain commerce start at the same hour on the same day. Same shoe, same morning, two different front doors.

The Alphafly exists because of one morning in Vienna. In October 2019 Eliud Kipchoge covered the marathon distance in under two hours in a prototype that was not a retail product, and the shoe that reached stores the following year as the Alphafly NEXT% was the version Nike could actually sell. It became the loudest entry in the arms race that followed, and it drew the rules that now govern the category. World Athletics capped road-racing stack height at 40mm and limited shoes to a single rigid plate, which is close to the only technical regulation in distance running that was written with one company’s product in the room. Inside Nike’s own range the Alphafly sits above the Vaporfly, taller and heavier, built for the full marathon rather than the distances below it. The third generation arrived in 2024 and spent that year underneath a long list of major-marathon finishers. That is the odd position the Alphafly occupies now. It is a shoe almost nobody needs, bought in volume by people running times it was never designed around, and Nike has spent four generations refusing to simplify it into something cheaper.

The fourth generation’s real change sits under the forefoot. Nike updated the Air Zoom unit for the first time in the Alphafly’s history and describes the result as softer and quieter than the pods it replaces, which is a more interesting sentence than it looks given how much of the line’s identity has been those two bulbs. Above them runs a dual-foam arrangement, ZoomX beneath ZoomX LT, the lightest version of the foam Nike makes, with a wide carbon Flyplate through the middle for stability. The upper is a revised Atomknit and there is added cushioning under the curved forefoot. In the press frames the Total Orange pair reads as a single saturated block at any distance, Hyper Crimson bleeding into a Bordeaux midsole with Burgundy Ash at the heel, and the close crops show the Air pods picking up a hard pink against the darker foam. The women’s Hyper Pink runs Fuchsia Blast and Bright Crimson over a black outsole. Nike has been willing to put Air in a racer in stranger ways than this, as the four-unit Apex showed.

The distribution is the story here, not the colorway. This site recorded the Alphafly 4 arriving about six weeks ahead of schedule in September and selling out the day it landed. Two months on, the women’s pair walks straight into general commerce while the men’s pair keeps a draw in front of it. That is a brand deciding which half of its audience still has to be rationed, and the answer it landed on is the one runners have been complaining about for most of a decade. Worth noticing too: Nike’s own copy leads on “quieter.” For a shoe sold to people chasing a time, the acoustic behaviour of an Air unit is a strange first claim, and it reads like a change the engineers could measure going looking for a benefit the marketing could name. The honest version of that claim is probably comfort over distance rather than silence, since a quieter pod is usually a softer one, and softer is a thing a marathoner late in a race can actually feel.

Retail on both pairs is $280, which is no longer an outlier so much as the ceiling the whole super-shoe category has drifted toward. adidas prices the Adizero Adios Pro 5 under it, and the carbon racers from Saucony and PUMA sit lower still. What the extra money buys is the Air unit, the one component none of the rivals carry and the reason the Alphafly has always been the heaviest shoe in its own weight class. Past Alphafly colorways have generally drifted back toward retail on the secondary market once the first wave clears, with championship makeups the exception, and a general-release orange and a general-release pink are not the shape of pair that usually breaks that pattern. The SNKRS gate on the men’s size run is the one variable that could change it, which is its own argument for why the gate is there.

The Alphafly 4 arrives November 12. The men’s Total Orange is style code IM5546-800 and opens through a SNKRS entry window that morning. The women’s Hyper Pink is IM5547-600 and lists as a standard release the same day at the same hour. Retail on both is $280. Nike carries each pair directly, at nike.com for the Total Orange and nike.com for the Hyper Pink, and Running Warehouse stocks the Alphafly line.
