Pharrell’s VIRGINIA Watermoc Is the First One He Made to Actually Wear

$140

adidas Originals and Pharrell Williams release the VIRGINIA Watermoc on September 5 in Blue, Yellow and Black at $140. It is the third silhouette in the VIRGINIA line and the first one that looks like it wants to be worn rather than photographed, which after the Adistar Jellyfish is a notable shift.

Pharrell has been working with adidas since 2014, which makes this one of the longest continuous partnerships in the business and one that has changed shape several times. Humanrace came and went. VIRGINIA, named for the state he comes from, is the current imprint, and it has been deliberately strange so far. The Adistar Jellyfish was maximalist to the point of parody, a translucent, exaggerated thing that worked as a statement and not much else. The Flat Earther went the opposite direction into restraint. The Watermoc is the first entry that picks a real use case, and adidas is explicit about where it came from. It is drawn from the early-2000s adidas Adventure Water Moc, a genuine outdoor shoe from a period when the brand’s outdoor arm was making odd, functional footwear that nobody was buying for fashion.

The build reflects that lineage. There is a neoprene U-throat, which is the detail that makes it a water moc rather than a sneaker with a bungee, plus mesh panels for ventilation, reflective webbing, bungee speed lacing and a rubber lug outsole. That is a real specification list for a shoe that will mostly be worn to get coffee, and the components are the ones you would pick if the shoe actually had to get wet and drain. Reflective webbing and a lug outsole are not decisions a lifestyle shoe needs to make, and neither is a U-throat, which exists so the shoe can be pulled on and off with wet hands. adidas revealed it during a beach takeover in Marseille earlier this summer, which is the correct venue for a shoe like this and a rare case of a launch setting matching the product.

The Adventure line is worth a moment, because most people reading this will not have seen one. In the early 2000s adidas ran an outdoor sub-brand that produced water shoes, approach shoes and trail hybrids with a design language that owed nothing to sportswear. They were unfashionable at the time and have aged into exactly the sort of archive brands mine now. adidas has been pulling from it steadily, and handing a piece of it to Pharrell rather than reissuing it straight is the more interesting version of that move.

The timing is the smart part. The water shoe has quietly become one of the more active categories in footwear, with Salomon, Merrell and Keen all finding an audience for amphibious silhouettes that used to be strictly functional. Pharrell arriving with a $140 version through adidas Originals is not early to that, but it is well placed, and $140 is the most accessible price VIRGINIA has offered. The Jellyfish sat far above it. A line that has been running on spectacle needs a shoe people will buy twice, and this is the first one that could be it. Three colorways at launch rather than one supports that reading. Blue, Yellow and Black is a range built to cover taste rather than to create a chase.

On price, $140 is the number to hold against the rest of the category rather than against Pharrell’s back catalog. It sits above a plain outdoor water shoe from a technical brand and below the collaboration premium the Jellyfish carried. For a three-colorway global launch rather than a limited drop, that reads as adidas pricing for sell-through, and it suggests the pack is not meant to be difficult to get. That is worth saying plainly, because Pharrell releases carry an assumption of scarcity that this one does not appear to be built on. Nothing in the announcement points to a raffle, a numbered run or a regional exclusive.

The adidas Originals x Pharrell Williams VIRGINIA Watermoc arrives September 5 in Blue, Yellow and Black at $140, available globally through the CONFIRMED app, adidas.com/pharrell and select retailers.
