On Cloudsurfer 3 Debuts Surreal Superfoam and Goes to Run Shops First

On announced the Cloudsurfer 3 on September 15, and the shoe arrives October 1 at specialist running shops only. On.com does not get it until early 2027. That is the second-most interesting thing in the announcement. The first is that the Cloudsurfer 3 is the debut of Surreal, a new proprietary superfoam built at On Labs in Zurich to replace Helion, the compound the brand has leaned on for its everyday trainers.

The Cloudsurfer sits in the middle of On’s road range, the cushioned daily trainer rather than the race shoe or the max-stack cruiser. It has been the model On uses to introduce structural ideas. The Cloudsurfer 2, still listed on On.com, pairs CloudTec Phase with Soft Helion, and the Phase system is the piece that makes On’s midsoles look unlike anyone else’s: hollow Cloud elements arranged so they collapse in sequence as the foot rolls forward, rather than a solid slab of foam doing all the work at once. That geometry is On’s actual signature, more than any single compound, and it is the reason the brand can talk about structure and material as two separate levers. Most of its competitors only have the one.

The Cloudsurfer 3 pulls both. Surreal is the new foam, developed at On’s Foam Competency Center and described by the brand as lighter, softer and more responsive than Helion. CloudTec Phase has been re-oriented around it, with the Cloud elements re-sequenced to smooth the roll. On put numbers to the combination using Advanced Finite Element Analysis, its in-house simulation work: 15.5 percent deeper compression than the foam alone, and a 9.9 percent reduction in peak braking force. Up top there is a new engineered warp knit mesh. The shoe weighs 285 grams in a men’s US 8.5, runs an 8mm drop, and comes in sizes 36 to 49. Scott Maguire, On’s president and COO, framed the breakthrough as engineering structure into a new foam rather than simply making one.

Take the percentages with the caveat On itself supplies. Both figures come from computer models, not from runners, and the release footnotes them as predictive FEA analysis on virtual prototypes. That is an honest way to publish a claim and it is still a simulation. Nobody knows how Surreal behaves at mile eighteen in August until somebody runs mile eighteen in August in it. The number that is not a simulation is the distribution plan, and it is the real news here. On is a brand that built itself on owning the customer relationship, and it has chosen to hand its newest foam to run specialty for roughly a quarter before letting its own website touch it. Brands say they support the run shop constantly. Very few of them give up a launch window to prove it, and On giving up this particular one, on the first shoe carrying a platform foam, costs more than a press release does.

The other read is that Surreal is not really a Cloudsurfer story at all. On says the foam is set to play a growing role across the running range, which makes this launch a platform reveal dressed as a daily trainer. Helion has been the floor under On’s road line for years. Replacing it is a bigger decision than any single shoe, and putting the first version in the hands of the people who fit runners for a living is a sensible way to find out whether it works before it is under everything. On used a similar patience with LightSpray on the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper.

Retail is $160 in the United States, 170 euros, 150 pounds and 210 Swiss francs. The Cloudsurfer 2 lists at $160 on On.com, so a new proprietary foam, a re-engineered midsole geometry and a new upper all arrive with no increase at all. That number deserves more attention than it will get, because the superfoam era has mostly been an excuse to move daily trainers toward $180 and race shoes past $250. Holding at $160 while claiming a material breakthrough is a more aggressive competitive move than either percentage in the press release, and it puts the Cloudsurfer 3 directly against the mid-range daily trainers from Brooks, ASICS and Saucony rather than above them.

The On Cloudsurfer 3 pre-launches October 1, 2026, exclusively through specialist running retailers, at $160. A full global rollout across all channels, including On.com and On’s own stores, follows in early 2027. It weighs 285 grams in a men’s US 8.5, runs an 8mm drop and covers sizes 36 to 49. On has not published a style code for it. The brand’s recent FKA twigs Cloudmonster 3 Mule shows where the lifestyle half of the line is heading in the meantime.
