Reebok Shipped the Manors Club C Revenge Before the Collection It Belongs To

Reebok and Manors built a golf collection together, and Reebok is releasing it backward. The Reebok x Manors Club C Revenge Golf Shoes are live on reebok.com in two colorways, Vintage Chalk with Espresso and Reebok Gum, and Vintage Chalk with Legacy Green and Linen. The polos, the quarter-zip and the cap that belong to the same collaboration are not live. On the same store they still carry a Set a Reminder button against an October 20 date.

The Club C has never been complicated. It arrived in 1985, the name is short for Club Champion, and Reebok built it as a tennis shoe during the years when tennis shoes were effectively the whole company. Garment leather over a ventilated tongue, a terry lining, a flat low sole, and the drawing has barely moved since. The Revenge is the branch of the family Reebok reaches for when the Club C has to do a job, and the golf makeup is the clearest case of that. Reebok’s description of the standard pair is unusually specific about why it works: a water-resistant full grain leather upper to handle wet grass, and a golf-specific spikeless outsole that grips from tee to green. That is the entire argument for putting a tennis silhouette on a course. The flat, wide, laterally stable platform a 1985 hard-court shoe needed is close to what a golf swing asks of a shoe, and the only part that has to change at all is the bottom. Golf has spent a decade walking away from the saddle shoe, and spikeless now does the volume.

The Manors pairs keep the full grain upper in vintage chalk and put the collaboration’s color on everything framing it. The Legacy Green pair runs a dark green Vector down the lateral side, a green heel counter and collar, a green sockliner and a green outsole, with the Reebok script picked out in the same green near the toe. The Espresso pair does the same in dark brown over a gum outsole. MANORS is printed on the lateral panel where a Club C normally carries nothing at all. The detail Reebok’s copy calls a distinctive cross check pattern turns out, in the photographs, to be a small checkerboard on the tongue rather than anything running across the upper. Underneath, both pairs carry the same densely dimpled spikeless outsole as the standard golf Club C, tinted to match. Reebok also promises a custom Manors box, which is the one claim a product photograph cannot settle.

Two things here are worth noticing. The first is the order. A collaboration normally lands as a single drop, and when it does stagger, the shoe is usually the thing held back, because the shoe is what people set an alarm for. Reebok did the reverse, and the shoes are already thin, with at least one size of the Espresso pair showing a single pair left. The anchor of the collection is selling without the campaign around it. The second is the copy. Reebok sells the standard Club C Revenge Golf on its engineering and sells the Manors version on nothing but its look, which is Manors colors, a Manors box and a check pattern. The water resistance and the spikeless outsole are both plainly still there. Reebok simply decided that somebody paying the collaboration premium is buying the label rather than the shoe, and on a golf shoe, where the buyer has to walk eighteen holes in it, that is a strange thing to leave out.

At $130 the Manors pair asks $20 over both the men’s and the women’s standard Club C Revenge Golf, which Reebok lists at $110 each, and $30 over the plain Club C Golf at $100. For scale inside the same store, a Club C 85 in its Vintage build is $85. The strange number is the apparel. The Manors quarter-zip pullover is $140 and the mockneck polo is $125, so the clothes in this collaboration cost as much as or more than the shoe leading it, which is not how sneaker collaborations are usually priced. Reebok has been testing the top of its range lately, most visibly with the $220 SpeedShifter.

The Reebok x Manors Club C Revenge Golf Shoes are available now at reebok.com in unisex sizing from M 6.5 / W 8 to M 14 / W 15.5, at $130. The style codes are 100284837 for Vintage Chalk / Espresso / Reebok Gum and 100284838 for Vintage Chalk / Legacy Green / Linen. Reebok has published no release date for the shoes, which are simply listed and buying, while the rest of the Manors range is dated October 20 on the same store. Manors sells its own line at manorsgolf.com.
